On the 7th of October 2022 the Catalan Institute of Oncology and the University of Barcelona will host a Multiplier Event to present the final version of INSTrUCT, an Open Educational Resource in smoking cessation addressed to students undertaking degrees in health professions.

During the multiplier event, experts in tobacco control and academics will talk about how to implement smoking cessation education addressed to future health professionals during their educational years. Scholars and members of the INSTrUCT project (an ERASMUS + project) will share their experience in using INSTrUCT to teach students how to support smokers to quit. Consequently helping them to contribute to tackling the tobacco epidemic in Europe.

Tobacco use is a significant public health hazard, responsible for nearly 700.000 annual deaths in Europe. Despite these figures, 23% of European adults are still smokers, with the consequent risk of maintaining and even increasing the burden of tobacco-related diseases across the continent. Students from healthcare professions are expected to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to treating tobacco dependence in order to reduce the burden of tobacco-related diseases. 

The International Meeting will cover the following objectives:

  • To debate with key speakers: tobacco control experts, public health authorities, academics, and university higher-level figures on the importance of providing “Smoking Cessation” training to the future generation of health professionals in Europe.
  • To publicly share the content of INSTrUCT, an Open Educational Resource.
  • To engage Higher Education organizations and scholars in their future use of INSTrUCT.
