Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Tobacco Control, Head of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program and the Tobacco Control Unit. He is the Coordinator of the Epidemiology and Public Health Program at IDIBELL and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

Degree in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1990. Predoctoral researcher from 1990 to 1994 in the Research Unit in Clinical and Molecular Epidemiology of Cancer (IMIM). Master in Public Health and Doctor from the UAB in 1995. He did a postdoctoral stay (1995) in the General Epidemiology Laboratory of the “Mario Negri” Institute in Milan.

He has worked in the epidemiology of cancer, especially in tobacco and other risk factors, as well as the analysis of trends in cancer incidence and mortality. Currently, the main area of ​​his research is tobacco control. He is also interested in teaching epidemiological methods and scientific writing. He has written more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has been director (2004 to 2010) of the magazine Gaceta Sanitaria, Vice President (2013-14) and President (2015-16) of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology and Academic Director of the School of Public Health of Menorca (from 2016 to 2021)
