Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Tobacco Control, Head of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program and the Tobacco Control Unit. He is the Coordinator of the Epidemiology and Public Health Program at IDIBELL and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

Doctor of Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 1990. Predoctoral researcher from 1990 to 1994 at the Unit of Clinical and Molecular Epidemiology Research of Cancer (IMIM). Master’s in Public Health and PhD from UAB in 1995. Completed a postdoctoral stay (1994-1995) at the General Epidemiology Laboratory of the “Mario Negri” Institute in Milan.

His research has focused on tobacco control, from characterizing the epidemic to studying its various determinants (social, price, advertising, industry, etc.) and how to implement preventive and control measures. Likewise, his studies include exposure to secon-hand tobacco smoke, the use of electronic cigarettes and new tobacco and nicotine products, as well as second-hand exposure to electronic cigarette aerosols. He is also interested in implementation research in the cancer continuum, teaching epidemiological methods, and scientific writing. He has authored over 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He was the editor-in-chief (2004 to 2010) of thejournal Gaceta Sanitaria, Vice President (2013-14), and President (2015-16) of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology, and Academic Director of the Minorca School of Public Health (from 2016 to 2021). He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Tobacco Control and since December 2023, he has been the President of the Advisory Council on Tobacco in Catalonia.
