Dr. Cristina Martínez is a Senior Researcher and Adjunct at the Tobacco Control Unit of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), as well as Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona (UB) and Adjunct Professor at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). She obtained her PhD in Clinical Sciences from the University of Barcelona in 2011 and holds a degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology and Nursing Sciences. She has postgraduate training in Health Policy from the UCSF (La Caixa Foundation, 2007) and in Implementation Sciences (TIDIRH Program, USA).
Dr. Martinez has designed several tobacco control programs aimed at transferring scientific knowledge into practice in healthcare services. She has worked with mixed methodologies (qualitative and quantitative) involving participation-action to enable the implementation of programs through the coordination of the “Smoke-free Hospitals” project. Her scientific contribution stands out due to her knowledge in the analysis of political-health needs and her experience in the implementation of strategies to reduce the hazardous effects of smoking in our society.
Her main research lines include the evaluation of programs and the transference of research into practice by applying health policy measures at local, national and international levels. The specific content of her research includes the following areas: tobacco control in healthcare services, applied research (through the design and evaluation of educational programs and cessation interventions), and the regulatory framework of tobacco control policies (mainly smoke-free regulations), by integrating a comprehensive and integrative view addressed to vulnerable populations.
She is currently the principal investigator of six ongoing projects: three related to the development of training programs at international and national levels (INSTrUCT – ERASMUS +; PISCIS and ISCI_SEC – Global Bridges International); two projects targeting vulnerable populations with mental disorder and substance abuse (ACT_ATAC and DUCATA funded by the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias and the Plan Nacional sobre Drogas respectively), in addition to a regional cohort study where nursing students have been followed up (ECTEC_S). She has also been PI of complex multicenter projects such as a pragmatic community trial (QUIT_MENTAL) and several cross-sectional studies (ETHIF, ECTEC, etc). She is a research collaborator on other studies led by researchers from UCT, UB and UCSF.
Her scientific contribution includes the publication of about 90 articles related to tobacco control accepted in high level impact factor journals and the presentation of about 80 communications in conferences. She is a regular reviewer of international scientific journals in the field of prevention and public health. She is also a member of several working groups on smoking, including the Tobacco Group of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology.
